Our full review

CaribSea Eco-Complete Planted Substrate is a fully cycled, nutrient-rich substrate designed specifically for freshwater planted aquariums, giving aquatic plants the foundation they need to establish strong root systems right from setup. Unlike inert gravel that requires additional fertilizer dosing from day one, this substrate arrives pre-charged with live bacteria and volcanic mineral content, meaning your tank is essentially cycled before you even add fish. The heather-brown, porous volcanic soil particles are naturally rich in iron and other essential trace elements that plants crave, eliminating the guesswork of layering separate substrate systems or relying solely on liquid fertilizers to keep your aquascape thriving.

The physical composition of Eco-Complete is just as thoughtful as its chemical makeup. Each grain is irregularly shaped and porous, creating countless nooks that beneficial bacteria colonize quickly, which supports biological filtration and helps maintain stable water parameters over time. This texture also allows plant roots to anchor firmly without compacting into a dense, oxygen-starved layer, reducing the risk of anaerobic pockets that can produce harmful hydrogen sulfide gas. The dark, natural coloration provides an attractive backdrop that makes fish colors and plant greens pop, giving your aquarium a polished, professional look whether you're building a lush Amazon-style biotope or a minimalist Iwagumi layout.

Because it ships wet and alive rather than dry and dormant, Eco-Complete cuts down significantly on the initial cloudiness and dust that often plague new substrate installations, so you can plant and fill your tank with far less rinsing and less waiting for water to clear. It's compatible with root tab fertilizers and CO2 injection setups for hobbyists chasing more demanding carpeting plants, yet forgiving enough for beginners planting hardy species like Anubias, Cryptocoryne, or Java Fern. Sold in resealable bags in various sizes to suit anything from a small nano tank to a large planted display, CaribSea Eco-Complete has become a trusted staple among freshwater aquascapers who want a substrate that actively contributes to a healthy, self-sustaining ecosystem rather than just serving as decorative cover for the tank bottom.

Plants took off fast

Switched from plain gravel to this and my swords and crypts rooted noticeably faster within two weeks. No rinsing needed, straight out of the bag into the tank.

Great substrate, a bit dusty at first

Had some initial cloudiness for about a day despite not rinsing, but it cleared up with the filter running. Fish and plants are thriving now, no complaints otherwise.

Perfect dark background for my betta tank

The black color really makes my betta's colors stand out. Texture is soft enough that I haven't seen any fin damage, and my anubias are doing great anchored in it.

Good product but pricey

Works as advertised and my plants look healthy, but the cost per bag adds up fast for a larger tank. Had to buy several bags for my 55 gallon.

Beginner friendly substrate

As someone new to planted tanks, this made setup so much easier. No complicated dosing needed right away and my stem plants are rooting well after a month.
