Our full review
Seachem Purigen is a premium filtration resin designed to polish aquarium water to a level of clarity and purity that conventional carbon or mechanical media simply cannot match. Unlike standard filter media that only trap debris or adsorb odors temporarily, Purigen works at the molecular level to remove dissolved organic waste before it breaks down into ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate. This proactive approach means cleaner water, reduced odors, and a noticeably brighter, almost glass-like clarity in both freshwater and saltwater systems. Aquarists consistently note that tanks using Purigen show less yellowing over time, giving the water that pristine, showroom appearance even between water changes.
What sets Purigen apart is its unique resin structure, which changes color as it exhausts, shifting from an off-white or tan color to a dark brown or black. This visual cue lets hobbyists know exactly when it's time for regeneration or replacement, taking the guesswork out of maintenance schedules. Regeneration is simple: the resin can be steeped in a chlorine bleach solution, rinsed thoroughly, and then treated with a dechlorinator like Seachem Prime before being returned to the filter, restoring it to near-original effectiveness. This makes Purigen a cost-efficient, reusable option compared to single-use filter pads or carbon inserts, appealing to both budget-conscious keepers and those who want to minimize waste.
Purigen is safe for use in all types of aquariums, including reef tanks, planted setups, and fish-only systems, and it does not strip essential trace elements or medications unless specifically designed to target them. It's typically housed in a mesh bag, either the one included in the packaging or a hobbyist's own filter media bag, allowing water to flow through freely while trapping the resin securely in place within canister filters, hang-on-back filters, or sumps. Widely regarded as a staple in serious aquarium maintenance routines, Seachem Purigen is favored by breeders, reefers, and casual hobbyists alike who want to maintain optimal water quality, support fish and invertebrate health, and reduce the frequency of large-scale water changes without compromising on tank stability.
What owners say
Water went from cloudy to glass-clear
I was skeptical since I already run carbon, but Purigen took my water clarity to another level entirely. Within 24 hours my 55 gallon looked like it had no water in it at all. Highly recommend adding this alongside your existing media.
Essential for my reef tank
Been using this in my reef system for over a year now. It keeps nitrates in check between water changes and the bag turns dark brown right when I expect it needs recharging. Bleach recharge process is simple once you get the hang of it.
Great product, just pricier than carbon
Works exactly as advertised - my tank stays clearer longer between cleanings. Only reason for 4 stars is the cost compared to carbon, but the fact you can recharge it makes up for that over time.
Solid resin, mesh bag is weak
The product itself does exactly what it says - excellent clarity and organic removal. My only gripe is the included bag started fraying after a few recharge cycles. I now keep it in a sturdier reusable media bag instead.
Perfect for my planted tank
Worried it might strip nutrients my plants need, but I haven't noticed any issues. Water is noticeably clearer and my fish seem happier with the cleaner water. Will keep buying this.
